Ford of Europe has been awarded the Car Company of the Year title for 2007.

Autocar magazine dished out the prestigious honour at an awards show this week attended by more than 400 industry insiders from around the world.

In addition, the automaker picked up the Car of the Year and International Van of the Year gongs for its S-MAX and Transit models.

But the night was more a celebration of the industry, according to Autocar editor Chas Hallet.

He said: "The car business is often an easy target and gets unjustly blamed for many things, but it inspires and pioneers new technology."

"It is – and will always be – one of the UK’s most vital industrial assets," Mr Hallett added.

Ford is a US automobile manufacturing company based in Dearborn, Michigan.

It was originally founded by Henry Ford in 1903.
