A Fiat 500 exclusively designed by famous artist Tracey Emin has brought in £42,000 at auction.

The supermini has been made to look as if the designer’s work has been taken "quite literally out of the gallery and on to the street".

Proceeds from the sale with goes to PEAS – a company raising funds for a Ugandan school library project, with three more vehicles made up by Emin going under the hammer towards the end of 2008.

"I really enjoyed working on the Fiat 500, which I refer to as the ‘mouse car’," said Emin.

Motorists looking to take a spin in a more traditionally-designed version of the car can get behind the wheel and drive it out of Fiat dealerships from January 2008.

The Fiats rank as possibly the least controversial of Tracey Emin’s recent projects.

Emin’s Turner Prize exhibition My Bed – which consisted of her unmade bed surrounding by blood-stained underwear and used condoms – caused a stir when it was submitted in 1999.
