Although the new Volkswagen Golf Estate is not expected to appear on UK roads until next year, motorists looking to sample the vehicle prior to then are to be able to do so across Europe.
The sixth generation Golf is set to hit European markets from September and features many of the same changes that motorists can look forward to witnessing in the UK.
Changes have been made to the vehicle’s appearance with a new bold headlight styling being one of the noticeable developments.
Meanwhile, there is a dedication towards ensuring that the vehicle’s occupants remain as safe as possible through the inclusion of ABS brakes, six airbags and whiplash-optimised head restraints.
Furthermore, motorists will have the choice of four petrol engines or one of two diesel units, with a BlueMotion version on offer for those concerned about their carbon footprint.
Volkswagen has revealed that the Golf Estate also retains the famous drive and handling of a more typical model, despite the extra space offered to motorists.
In addition, the car is described as being "exciting" and "practical", offering 1,550 litres of luggage space.
A Volkswagen Golf driver was left without her car for almost three months and owing £2,240 in fines following some antics from Lambeth Council.
Ruth Ducker regularly parks her vehicle around the corner from her home in Camberwell, but was surprised one day to find the car gone, with double yellow lines in its place.
She knew it would not have been stolen as there was no battery in it, something she was about to replace.
It was eventually discovered that the car was lifted from the road by contractors so the lines could be painted and then replaced.
Later that day, some parking enforcers had the car towed away as it was deemed to be ‘illegally’ parked.
However, it needed the intervention of local MP Kate Hoey to get the car back and the finds waived, almost three months after the incident took place.
Mrs Ducker said: "What they did was disgraceful. I’m very grateful to my MP.
"I knew that to pay up would be an admission of guilt, so I decided to fight them. They offered a paltry £100 to compensate for lost road tax, insurance and inconvenience. Needless to say I still haven’t received a penny."
According to Volkswagen, the latest Golf is "refined throughout", while also being the most luxurious, safest and quietest ever built.
A selection of safety technologies have been added to the upcoming Volkswagen Golf Estate to ensure that motorists buying the vehicle are given the greatest chance of remaining in one piece should they become involved in an accident.
Among the safety additions to the estate are driver and front passenger whiplash-optimised head restraints, six airbags and ABS brakes.
Meanwhile, drivers will also be able to profit from vast amounts of comfort, alongside the choice of a number of revised engines.
These include a 1.4-litre petrol offering, a 1.6-litre TDI common rail unit or a BlueMotion version with an added focus towards supporting the environment through both reduced CO2 emissions and greater fuel efficiency.
Furthermore, the upcoming Golf Estate, which will begin arriving in 2010 after orders begin in October this year, gains a fresher look through redesigned headlamps and changes to the front and rear bumpers.
According to Volkswagen, "excitement is now a practical choice" for motorists through the Golf Estate, while the car also offers 1,550 litres of luggage space when the rear seats are dropped.
Motorists prepared to delay the purchasing of a new car until the end of the year could profit from owning a Volkswagen Golf Estate.
Fans of the new Golf Hatchback may be interested in the vehicle as it follows much of the same recipe, while offering more space in the boot.
According to Cars UK, "it will be a good car, and it will sell to the ultra-conservative buyer looking for VW reliability and Golf longings who needs more space".
The vehicle will be given the same "smart looking front end" as the hatch, including a new nose, however, there will be some features that will be available for the first time on a Golf Estate, including Park Assist technology and a reversing camera.
Deliveries of the vehicle are expected to begin in the UK in 2010.
According to Volkswagen, the Golf Estate offers motorists 1,550 litres capacity, while also being a practical choice because of the drive and handling it provides.
Overall, it offers a lot of luggage space without sacrificing on performance.
The latest Volkswagen Golf could be the optimum car for motorists looking for something that will be cheap to run while offering the refinement typically found in a larger vehicle, according to a reviewer.
Writing for the Aberdeen Press & Journal, Richard M. Hammond states that the new Golf impresses in a host of areas from the standards of the interior to what can be achieved when on the road.
He comments that the Golf features "supportive and comfortable" cloth seats, while high-quality materials are used throughout.
Meanwhile, large amounts of space are up for use in the rear thanks to the car’s high roof, with Mr Hammond also pointing out that the boot is both wide and square, which could potentially be of benefit to families.
On the road, he remarks that a "brisk performance" can be witnessed through the Golf’s 1.6-litre engine, which is smooth and "reasonably nimble".
Overall, Mr Hammond concludes that the new Golf is "going to be a hard car to follow", due to it being "very hard to fault".
According to Volkswagen, motorists getting behind the wheel of the latest Golf will experience "pure driving pleasure".
The Volkswagen Golf has proved to be a popular vehicle across Europe, after topping the sales polls during April.
JATO Dynamics has revealed that the Golf reclaimed its title as Europe’s top-selling car from the Ford Fiesta.
These, alongside the Volkswagen Polo and the Fiat Panda, were the only four to witness increased sales year-to-date over the same period last year.
The Fiesta in particular saw strong sales in the big five new car markets consisting of Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the UK.
David Di Girolamo, head of JATO Consult, said: "National government scrappage schemes are really starting to have an impact, both in the sales volumes in different markets and in the type of cars being sold.
"The bigger picture shows the size of the drop in new car sales across Europe and we’ll continue to monitor this closely for signs of a wider improvement."
Meanwhile, Volkswagen also remained the best selling manufacturer across Europe.
Those motorists opting for the 2.0-litre TDI Golf can expect to generate 129g/km of carbon dioxide.
Journalists will be among the first to sample the new Volkswagen Golf GTI, as it is to be available for a test drive before it is released for the whole market to enjoy.
The official launch date for the new GTI is May 22nd, but the media can get a taste of the vehicle by arriving at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ (SMMT) Millbrook Proving Ground for a test day.
This event is occurring the day before the vehicle’s official launch, with visitors getting the opportunity to test some of the car’s changes over past models.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is powered by a new 2.0-litre TSI engine, while unique springs and dampers have been used to lower the suspension and improve a driver’s on-the-road experience.
Meanwhile, in terms of appearance, the car has been given a more aggressive front bumper, which sits just below a new front grille.
Other key features of the Golf GTI is the inclusion of front fog lights, rear tinted windows and a uniquely-shaped rear spoiler.
