Far-ranging electric 4x4s

Liberty Electric Cars is specialising in converting high-end Range Rovers and 4x4s to be electrically powered yet with no loss of performance.

They hope to create 250 new jobs and after building their production train, they anticipate producing tens of thousands of conversions per year.

Barry Shrier, Liberty founder and chief executive officer, says: "The Liberty Electric Range Rover takes electric vehicle technology into a new sector, to large luxury cars that people aspire to drive, particularly in cities and urban environments where environmental controls are becoming increasingly tighter.

"The Liberty Electric Range Rover will drive cleanly and quietly around roads and cities, free of tax, congestion and parking charges, making less environmental impact than even the smallest, most fuel efficient car, yet still offering the comfort and security of a luxury 4×4."

Electric vehicles running costs are 80 per cent less than a conventional fuel-powered alternative, and it is anticipated that the new cost of a converted Range Rover will be in the price range £95,000 to £125,000.

Land Rover predicts continued success

As we start to move towards the heart of the summer, the Range Rover for 2008 is set for its showroom debut at the start of July.

Its arrival could not be better timed, with one of the most impressive features on the new model being the four-zone air conditioning system.

This means that both front and rear passengers can control the heating and ventilation to suit their individual needs.

Sales of the Range Rover have already increased by 20 per cent year-on-year during the first five months of 2007, a trend which it is hoped will be sustained.

John Edwards, Land Rover UK managing director, explained that the popularity of the vehicle had much to do with its improving fuel economy.

"The engine’s great combination of performance and fuel economy has not only powered overall Range Rover sales, but also shifted our diesel/petrol mix, especially in Europe," he commented.

"Most Range Rover customers who would previously have bought a V8 petrol now choose a TDV8 instead, which offers petrol-like refinement but with 32 per cent better fuel economy."

Other convenient features include a ‘climate control’ windscreen, in addition to automatic rain and headlight sensing.

Range Rover takes leisure car of the year award

Range Rover’s Sport model has "once again proved its versatility" by winning the leisure car category of the 2006-07 Axa car of the year awards, the manufacturer has announced.

The award was given to the Range Rover Sport by the Ulster Motoring Writers Association (UMWA), the president of which, Jim McCauley, said the model was "an outstanding testament to the UK motor industry".

Mr McCauley pointed out that, as well as having "outstanding" on- and off-road capability, the 4×4 model offers a quality driving environment with "few equals".

John Edwards, managing director of Land Rover UK, said that this award is the latest piece of good news in what has been a positive last 12 months for the Sport model.

"The Range Rover Sport had a record sales year in the UK in 2006 and winning this award is a fantastic way to cap it off," Mr Edwards commented.

"This remarkable achievement proves the strong appeal of the vehicle and its true breadth of capability."

The Range Rover Sport is currently on sale at Land Rover dealerships across the UK, with prices starting at £35,665 on the road.
