BMW 3 Series is an award-winning vehicle

Motorists looking to buy an award-winning vehicle could keep an eye out for a used BMW 3 Series, as it has been given an accolade by What Car?.

For the fourth year in succession BMW’s most popular model range has been crowned the Best Compact Executive by the magazine.

The three cars in the running for the prize were all a part of the BMW 3 Series line up, with the BMW 320d ES proving to be the winner.

Klaus Kibsgaard, managing director of BMW UK, said: "It’s always a pleasure to be recognised for your endeavours.

"The BMW 3 Series is the lifeblood of our model portfolio and this prestigious award adds further weight to its class-leading position in the eyes of buyers."

BMW is no stranger to winning awards, with the manufacturer claiming the Engine Development Team of the Year accolade at the Automotive Testing Technology International Awards 2008.

According to a review of the 3 Series saloon by What Car?, the vehicle is "great to drive", with "informative steering and a range of strong engines".

BMW 3 Series notches up fourth consecutive Best Compact Executive title

The BMW 3 Series has notched up its fourth consecutive Best Compact Executive title at the What Car? awards.

Perhaps the result was not so surprising considering that all three cars which were up for the award were models from the BMW 3 Series family.

The BMW 320d ES was the model which triumphed over its family rivals, meaning that its popularity among used BMW buyers could well be boosted further.

Klaus Kibsgaard, managing director of BMW UK, said: “It’s always a pleasure to be recognised for your endeavours.

"The BMW 3 Series is the lifeblood of our model portfolio and this prestigious award adds further weight to its class-leading position in the eyes of buyers."

BMW prides itself on its green credentials, having first offered EfficientDynamics as a standard feature two years ago.

The BMW 3 series was launched in 1975, having been conceived as an entry-level luxury executive car.

The range is still going strong five generations on.

BMW 3 Series: ‘the most reliable car in the UK’

BMW’s biggest-selling model range, the 3 Series, has been voted the most reliable car in a poll of Britain’s vehicle leasing companies.

The survey, which examined the reliability history of nearly 900,000 vehicles in 2008, also found that BMW was the most reliable manufacturer overall.

The news will make the job of used BMW dealers even easier.

A total of 881,000 cars were assessed according to the number of breakdowns per 100 of each type of model on each leasing company’s fleet.

Fleet News, which conducted the research, pointed out that BMW’s success is all the more noteworthy when considering that Japanese car manufacturers traditionally top reliability surveys.

Far East firms still had a big presence in the top ten. The Toyota Avensis came second in the poll, the Honda Accord was third and the Honda Civic claimed eighth place.

The Volkswagen Golf finished a respectable fourth, the Ford Focus was in ninth and the ever-popular Audi A4 just made the top ten.

Autumn makeover for BMW 3

The BMW 3 Series is to receive a stylish makeover in time for the autumn.

The range will now feature a new interior and exterior appearance and will boast a new all-aluminium engine for increased performance, efficiency and emissions.

BMW is going for a more sporty, muscular look by adding two raised precision lines on the bonnet and re-profiling the BMW kidney grille.

The headlights will still feature twin corona side lights as standard but the front apron has been reshaped to give it a more contemporary appearance.

The new iDrive operating system comes with a hard disc drive used for the vehicle’s electronic data storage.

A total of 8Gb of this space is specifically set aside for the uploading of the driver’s favourite music tracks. The car can now store over 100 albums.

The current generation of 3 Series first debuted in 2005 and since then an average of 28,000 Saloons and 9,000 Touring models have been sold every year.

The M Sport accounts for a third of all 3 Series sales.

BMW 3-Series tops popularity poll

A ‘car of the year’ poll carried out by MSN Cars has found the BMW 3-Series coupe to be the most popular model, with 23 per cent of the vote.

Two other German vehicles featured in the top ten list, with the Porsche 911 Turbo and the Audi TT voted into seventh and eighth places respectively.

Italy was the country to exert the strongest dominance on the results, however, with the Ferrari 599 GTB in second place, the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 in fifth, the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder in ninth and the Alfa Romeo Brera taking tenth position.

Completing the list were the Jaguar XK in third spot, the Mini in fourth and the Koenigsegg CCX, which was voted into sixth place.

Tom Evans, manager of MSN Cars, stressed the value of this survey as the votes are given by members of the general public.

"After two years where the winners were the brilliant but somewhat inaccessible Aston Martin DB9 and Bugatti Veyron, it’s great that our users chose the much more down-to-earth BMW 3-Series coupe – a car that many may end up driving sooner or later," Mr Evans added.

"It’s a cracking looking car, and great to drive too, making it a worthy winner."
