How to get the Coolest Screensavers for Ubuntu(Linux, KDE)

This 3 part tutorial will guide you to getting a cool car screensaver with calendar & digital clock on Ubuntu.

Part 1: Install KDE
Open Terminal. So in Gnome, go to Applications > Accessories > Terminal
Then, in the terminal, type sudo aptitude update.
Install KDE with the command sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop
When KDE is done installing, type exit to get out of the terminal.
Then go to System and Log Out username.
Click Log Out in the next dialogue box.
Once you get to the login screen, click on Options and then Select Session.
In the Sessions dialogue, select KDE and then Change Session.
Log back in, and you should be using KDE.

Part 2:
Now you need to get some screensavers.
Download one of the screensavers from here: Audi Screensaver, BMW Screensaver, Ford Screensaver, Honda Screensaver, Land Rover Screensaver, Mazda Screensaver, Nissan Screensaver, Peugeot Screensaver, Renault Screensaver, Saab Screensaver, Suzuki Screensaver, Toyota Screensaver

Click on LINUX to download the tar.gz file for the screensaver.

Uncompress the file to your local folder. (I downloaded the bmw_calendar.swf.tar.gz file and uncompressed it into a folder called bmw_calendar.swf which contains bmw_calendar.swf)

Part 3:
Now we will set up the downloaded file as a screensaver.
Right click on Desktop and click on Configure Desktop.

The configure – KDesktop window opens. Click on Screen Saver and then click on the + icon at Banners & Pictures.


Click on Media Screen Saver and then click on Setup.


A Media Screen Saver window opens. Click on Add. This opens a dialog box: Select Media Files – Media Screen Saver.

Browse to the folder where you uncompressed the downloaded file and select a .swf file. Click on Open.

Click on OK. Then you can click on Test to view the screen saver, when you are done, click anywhere and click on OK.

You are now set to enjoy you nice screensaver on your dapper.

    Have you not got any Scrrensavers with Naked Ladys Sprawled across the Bonet like the old car Mags ?

    I really like these screensavers especially the Audi and Nissans,well cool with the calendar and clock built in.

    Lol, ‘Install KDE’ >> epic fail :P .

    You know… there are some guys out there who actually don’t like KDE and want to do this in GNOME :P ?
